Spurred by the horrendous terrorist attacks earlier this year, French citizens are arming up to protect themselves—the best they can, anyway, given France’s restrictive gun control laws.

A recent news story posted at americanmilitarynews.com revealed that there are approximately 7.5 million legally owned firearms in the country. Unfortunately for the law-abiding, the number of illegally owned guns is estimated to be somewhere between 10 million and 20 million.

The Nouvel Observateur, a weekly French news magazine, conducted an investigation and reported that since nightclub shootings have increased some 38 percent in the past five years, more people have become licensed gun owners. The terrorist massacre that took place at the offices of a French satirical magazine in January 2015, leaving twelve dead, has resulted in a 10 percent increase in legal gun ownership.
