Indiana—Victim Defense Bill Sent To Governor

posted on April 25, 2017

The Indiana House and Senate have passed a measure to help protect domestic violence victims, and the measure has been sent to Gov. Eric Holcomb for consideration.

HB 1071 passed the Indiana House 74-26 and the Senate 38-12 on Friday.  The measure would ensure that victims of domestic violence are not left defenseless at their most vulnerable time: while waiting for their carry permit to be approved. It provides victims of domestic violence, stalking and sexual abuse added protections against would-be abusers while protecting our constitutional right to self-defense and due process.

HB 1071 also urges the legislative council to assign a study committee to look into the repeal of the law which requires a person to obtain a license to carry a handgun in Indiana—an important step towards establishing “permitless” carry in the Hoosier State.
