Iowa Lawmakers Back Pro-Gun Constitutional Amendment

posted on January 17, 2017

Some 29 Iowa state senators have co-sponsored Senate Joint Resolution 2 (SJR2), which would add explicit constitutional protection for the right to keep and bear arms. SJR2 would add the following to the Iowa state constitution: “The right of an individual to acquire, keep, possess, transport, carry, transfer, and use arms to defend life and liberty and for all other legitimate purposes is fundamental and shall not be infringed upon or denied.”

Currently, 44 state constitutions contain provisions protecting the right to keep and bear arms. The only states lacking explicit guarantees are California, Iowa, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey and New York.
