Miami Armed Citizen Chases Intruder Under Mattress

posted on June 22, 2015

22-year-old Jesus Varela broke into a Miami Beach, Fla., apartment June 16 and attacked the 72-year-old occupant, who was preparing a meal for himself and feeding his dog.

According to a story posted on WLPG’s Local10.com, the occupant told Varela to leave, but Varela grabbed him by the neck and knocked him down. Details are sketchy, but when the occupant grabbed his .22-caliber pistol and fired a shot in his direction, Varela retreated to a bedroom. Varela wasn’t hit, but fell to the ground and hid … under a mattress.

Neighbors came to the occupant’s aid, subduing Varela until the police arrived. Varela faces charges of burglary and aggravated assault on a person 65 years of age or older.
