Oklahoma Deer Hunt, Travel Day

When you get a phone call asking if you would like to represent NRA Publications on a trophy deer hunt, the last answer that comes to mind is, “No, thanks.” When you then learn it is in your own home state, a mere four hours from your driveway, you try not to sound too excited when you answer, “Where do I sign up?”

That’s what brings me to western Oklahoma, north of the town of Elk City, located about 110 miles west of Oklahoma City. And since our faithful A1F Daily readers weren’t invited on the trip, we’re taking you along the best we can with a daily blog report of the hunt.

Our whitetail quest this week is sponsored by Remington and Bushnell, two storied companies in the firearms industries. Throw in a handful of other sponsors, including Hunters Specialties, Vista Outdoor, Ram Trucks and Birchwood Casey, and things are looking up—way up. … between the rolling prairies, thick draws, timbered creek bottoms and abundant winter wheat, this area holds good numbers of trophy whitetails.

Other writers/editors along on the hunt are freelance outdoor writer Brad Fenson, Gordy Krahn of Deer & Deer Hunting magazine, and Bob Robb, editor at Grandview Publications. Sponsors in attendance include Mike Capps of Howard Communications, which represents Birchwood Casey; Craig Cushman of Hunters Specialties; and Adam Ballard of Remington Arms.

Over the next five days, we’ll be hunting with Rut & Strut Guide Service. Todd Rogers of Rut & Strut manages 31,000 acres of prime deer property in a part of the country that isn’t your typical “deer woods.” But between the rolling prairies, thick draws, timbered creek bottoms and abundant winter wheat, this area holds good numbers of trophy whitetails.

For the hunt, we’ll be shooting the Remington R-25 GII rifles topped with Bushnell Trophy Xtreme scopes. And, of course, we’ll have plenty of Bushnell rangefinders and binoculars to try out as well.

With the traveling done, all that’s left now is to site in rifles, sort equipment, tell a few tall tales and get ready for the first day’s hunt. Check for an update tomorrow at Americas1stfreedom.org.

We hope you enjoy the trip!
