The Oklahoma Senate has approved a bill allowing school districts to designate individuals who may carry firearms on school grounds. Each school board would be allowed to choose a staff member to receive training as a security guard or reserve peace officer. This would expand the ability to carry firearms beyond school resource officers, while ensuring that the armed staff are properly trained and that decision-making power resides with the local school board.
The bill is headed to the desk of Gov. Mary Fallin for her consideration.
