Maine has joined the ranks of Arizona, Alaska, Wyoming, Kansas and Vermont in recognizing “permitless” concealed carry. Republican Gov. Paul LePage signed the carry bill on Wednesday, allowing legal concealed carry of handguns without a permit.

“On behalf of the NRA’s 5 million members, we would like to thank Gov. LePage, Senator Eric Brakey, and the House and Senate leadership for their work in pushing this legislation through,” said Chris W. Cox, executive director of NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action. “It’s encouraging to see a governor stand up for the rights of their constituents, instead of caving to the demands of an anti-gun billionaire from New York City.”

Legislative Document 652 goes into effect 90 days after lawmakers adjourn later this month. It leaves the current permit system in place for those who want to take advantage of Maine’s concealed-carry reciprocity agreements.
