The New York Times Repeats VPC Propaganda On Kids And Guns

posted on February 22, 2016

On Friday, The New York Times teamed with the extreme anti-gun Violence Policy Center to distort the tradition of families educating their children to hunt, shoot and handle firearms responsibly.

The Times irresponsibly repeated a VPC “report” titled “Start Them Young,” which attempted to equate gun industry efforts to educate and market to gun-owning families who hunt and shoot together with alleged tobacco industry efforts to market tobacco products to children.

In “Marketing Guns To Children,” the Times implies any effort to train youths in the responsible handling of firearms, or to pass on traditions of safe hunting and shooting, is based on industry self-interest. The Times doubles down by quoting child shooting statistics from another political advocacy group known for distorting data—Michael Bloomberg’s Everytown for Gun Safety.
