U.S. Reps Float Proposal For Gun Retailer Code Of Conduct

posted on September 30, 2015

Four Democrats in the House of Representatives proposed a measure that would establish a code of conduct for federal firearms licensees. The Justice Department would certify businesses that followed this code with a “Good Neighbor” certification. There are four items listed, three of which are more or less what gun retailers should already be doing: Not selling firearms to criminals, detecting theft of guns and cooperating with law enforcement.

The fourth item is not selling a firearm unless a background check has been completed, and this is the problem. Legislators continue to try to put this responsibility on gun sellers, but what anti-gunners call the “three-day loophole” is there for a reason. No one wants dangerous criminals getting their hands on firearms—and that’s why the pressure needs to be on the FBI to conduct checks in a timely fashion.
