Last October, Ashley Mundy was falling asleep with her four-year old son, Braedyn, when they were shaken awake by the sound of shattering glass. Mundy was surprised to find her neighbor, Bruce Jolly, disarming the security system in their Topeka home. Fortunately, she had armed herself with her 9 mm handgun, so she aimed and fired.

Now Mundy is speaking out. She recently told WIBW-TV, “My dad encouraged me to get a conceal and carry, and I just felt that was the thing to do at that moment.” After being shot in the arm and hip, Jolly escaped Mundy’s home, but was apprehended at a neighbor’s house—where police found he was carrying a machete during the invasion.

“He had meth in his system,” Mundy continued. “I worry about Braedyn every day and I can't imagine what he could have witnessed. You don't have to have a conceal and carry to have a gun in your home; why wouldn't you want to protect yourself?
