If you need to use your gun to fend off an intruder in the middle of the night, it certainly helps to be able to get a good sight picture. As a result, night sights came into existence, and they have come a long way because of the demand for improvements in such products. One of the newest options on the market comes from XS Sights.

XS Sights goes a little beyond the concept of sight markers that glow in dark conditions. The DXT2, offered in Optic Yellow or Optic Orange, uses a patent-pending formula that absorbs light, allowing a photoluminescent ring around the sight to glow before the tritium center does in a product line called DXT2 Big Dot Night Sights.

“Our DXT2 Big Dot Night Sights are the most visible night sights on the market today for defensive shooting,” said Zack Kinsley, marketing manager for XS Sights. “The industry-leading large diameter front sight increases the amount of light that is absorbed and reflected to the eye.  The yellow and orange color options we offer address different needs, since color perception can vary greatly between people.”

The product started shipping this week, but some outdoor writers got a preview of the product about a week earlier.

Some of the writers who shot guns with these sights noticed a quirkiness with them.

The company relies on a complementary parabolic-arch rear sight, as opposed to the U-shaped sight, and marks the center of the rear sight with a glowing “I.” Thus, when you’re lining up for a shot, you “dot the i”—or get the round front sight to line up on top of the rear vertical line.

Sounds easy enough, but the configuration means you have to be aware of your distance from the target and how far above the “i” the dot should be. So be aware that you need to run through some ammunition to practice with these sights.

The visibility more than makes up for that difference from other sights, though. And, by offering it in two colors, you can pick the version that best suits your vision.

DXT2 Big Dot Night Sights are backed by a 10-year warranty and will be available for the following pistol models by December 2018: All Glock models; Smith & Wesson M&P Full-size/Compact and M&P Shield; SIG Sauer P Series (P320, P226, P229); Springfield XD Series; and FNH FN509. The MSRP is $132.
