“Open Carry Guitar Rally” Misses The Point

Hundreds of Texans rallied in downtown Dallas on Sunday, wielding guitars in what—in some obscure fashion—was supposed to agitate against open carry of firearms. While the point of the event isn’t entirely clear, the feel-good message—“Make music, not violence!” or something to that effect—takes a chilling turn when juxtaposed with what else was going on in the Dallas area that day. Bystanders at the art gallery in Garland are alive now because an armed response to the supposedly ISIS-affiliated gunmen was so quick and authoritative. The hippie-dippie narrative that says, “Why so many guns?” seems harmless until you consider what the results would be if more people took it seriously.
