In response to the attacks on recruiting centers in Chattanooga, Tenn., the U.S. Navy announced it is authorizing arming personnel at reserve centers, according to a Fox News report.

The Navy becomes the first branch of the military to arm servicemen not on military installations. “The threat posed to military forces in the United States by homegrown violent extremists has increased,” said Cmdr. William Marks.

NRA has long advocated the restoration of Second Amendment rights for U.S. servicemen and women. Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., and Steve Daines, R-Mont., have introduced legislation authorizing those who work at recruiting centers to be armed, and Tennessee lawmakers from both sides of the aisle introduced legislation to lift the ban on servicemen and women carrying firearms on base.

Meanwhile, the governors of Nebraska, Florida, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas and Indiana have authorized the arming of personnel at their National Guard installations.
