Americans Reject Scheme To Pay Killers Not To Kill

posted on April 2, 2016

Four out of five Americans surveyed in a Rasmussen poll released Thursday disapprove of plans by some cities to reduce crime by paying criminals not to commit gun crime.

According to an article in the Washington Post, cities such as Washington, D.C.; Toledo; and Baltimore are considering programs similar to that adopted by Richmond, Calif., to pay killers to drop their guns. However, when asked, “Do you favor or oppose a plan in your community to pay criminals up to $1,000 a month not to kill someone with a gun?” only 5 percent of respondents agreed. More than 80 percent rejected it outright.

Ironically, the Post reports, “Five years into Richmond’s multimillion-dollar experiment, 84 of 88 young men who have participated remain alive, and four in five have not been suspected of another gun crime or suffered a bullet wound.”
