Committee Vote Set Today On Bill Gutting Louisiana Pre-emption Law

The Louisiana House Administration of Criminal Justice Committee will hold a public hearing this afternoon on an important measure that would gut the state’s firearm pre-emption law currently in effect.

House Bill 959, sponsored by Democrat state Rep. John Bagneris, would give the City of New Orleans the statutory authority to pass any law city officials wanted to govern the sale, purchase, possession, ownership, transfer, transportation, license, or registration of firearms and ammunition. The only reason city officials haven’t restricted citizens’ rights in these areas already is because Louisiana Revised Statutes Section 40:1796(A) prohibits municipalities and parishes from enacting ordinances and regulations more restrictive than state law.
