President Barack Obama on Tuesday turned the memorial for five slain Dallas law enforcement officers into a call for gun control.

After 15 minutes, his address veered away from possibly being the most uplifting of his presidency with the ridiculous assertion, “It’s easier for a teenager to get his hands on a Glock than it is to get a computer or even a book.”

As Obama droned on for another 25 minutes, Steve Krakauer exemplified the reaction on Twitter, first writing, “This is a great, unifying speech by President Obama, and actually calls out some in the #BlackLivesMatter movement”—but he then followed with, “… aaaand now Obama’s speech has veered into a political, divisive speech. Wow, what a strange turn after such unifying comments.” Former Reagan speechwriter John Podhoretz wrote, “That’s not presidential. That’s Bill Maher, or Trevor Noah.”

Yesterday, Paul Bedard noted that it is actually “41,000 percent easier for a teen to ‘get his hands on’ a book than a Glock.”
