The University of California-Davis has received a $5 million, 5-year grant from the state to establish what it calls the state’s “first ever gun violence research center” at the UC Davis Medical Center. The center will be run by UC Davis professor Garen Wintemute, who defends the center against claims of bias by saying, “We are driven by data, not by a policy agenda.”
Perhaps—but just who is backing this effort? Sen. Lois Wolk, who previously authored legislation turning California college campuses into gun-free zones, proposed the center; the California legislature, which just passed a package of the most draconian gun-control laws in the nation, passed the grant measure; Gov. Jerry Brown, who signed that package into law; and the American College of Emergency Physicians and the American Academy of Pediatrics, both of which back every gun-control scheme imaginable. Oh, and let’s not forget the president of UC Davis—former Obama Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, whose department once warned that returning veterans might constitute a terrorism risk.
Professor Wintemute, your new center contains more than a faint whiff of a hidden agenda.
Obama At A Loss For How To Help His Hometown
President Barack Obama is “deeply concerned.” Specifically, about his hometown. “Chicago, unfortunately, is one of those communities,” said White House spokesman Josh Earnest, referencing cities that have experienced a spike in violent crime levels. “The president does believe this is something worthy of our attention.”
Worthy, indeed. Deadly violence in Chicago is at record highs with no signs of slowing. Homicides in August alone reached a number not seen in nearly 20 years. Unfortunately, the president has nary a single solution. “I’m not aware of any specific prescription that the president’s prepared to put forward to address the situation just in Chicago,” said Earnest.
Let’s let Wayne LaPierre help him out. Here’s the NRA chief’s message to Obama: “Take violent criminals off the street. Prosecute them under the current federal gun laws, and make sure they don't get to their next crime scene. That's the way to save lives.”
Shooting, Gun Ownership Skyrocket Among Older Americans
The number of older Americans enrolling in basic firearm courses led by NRA Certified Instructors has jumped fourfold since 2010, recently released data shows, making people over 65 one of the fastest-growing demographics in gun ownership and the shooting sports.
Demand has risen so much that Frontier Justice, a gun shop and indoor range in Lees Summit, Kan., has started offering seniors-only firearm training classes this year, ranging from basic pistol skills for beginners to tactical classes for more advanced shooters. On many mornings, seniors can be seen waiting outside for the range to open its doors in an effort to take advantage of as much practice time as possible.
While some of the elderly patrons enjoy shooting for recreational purposes—“My friends like to knit; I like to shoot,” a regular patron explained to Frontier Justice President Bren Brown—some are there because they recognize that older Americans are often the targets of violent crime. “I hope I never have to use it,” another patron, 79-year-old Jack Kirce, said. “But if I have to, I’ve got it.”
John Kerry Doesn’t Want Americans To “Know What’s Going On”
A dozen years ago this month, we were fighting our hardest to keep John Kerry from winning the presidency. Now, we just wish we didn’t have to hear from Kerry—now secretary of state—anymore.
But since he still speaks up from time to time, we might as well tell you about how he recently said he wants media to stop covering terrorism attacks so “people wouldn’t know what’s going on.” Yes, you heard it right. Apparently Kerry now uses the Hillary Clinton playbook and believes keeping secrets from the American people is the best way to control them.
No doubt part of that has to do with Kerry’s aversion to private firearm ownership by law-abiding Americans. In the 2004 election, Kerry’s farcical act at being pro-gun was so pathetic that it likely hurt his chances more than helping them.
San Jose Police Chief Says 2A Outdated, Only LE/Military Need Semi-Autos
The police chief of San Jose, California—America’s 10th-largest city—reportedly believes that the Second Amendment is outdated; that semi-automatic rifles “should be for military and police use only;” that lawful citizens exercising their right to carry do not make police feel safer; and that the “status quo” on gun control in the U.S. is “absolutely” unacceptable.
In a wide-ranging interview with San Jose Inside, Police Chief Eddie Garcia claimed to “agree with the right to bear arms,” but said he suspects that if the firearms available today were available in the late 1700s, when the Second Amendment was adopted, that amendment would not look the same.
Garcia also likely raised eyebrows among many of his fellow officers when he said Black Lives Matter—at whose march five Dallas policemen were murdered in July—“is a very valid movement” and asserted that “this badge didn’t always stand for what it stands for today.”
Clerk Uses Gun To Stop Robbery At Obama Convenience Store
If you can’t see the irony in this “Armed Citizen” story, you’re just not trying.
Back in 2011, a Columbia, S.C., convenience store and gas station owner changed the name of his store to Obama Store, named for the U.S. president who doesn’t believe law-abiding Americans are qualified to use personally owned firearms to protect themselves from violent criminals. Fast forward to Monday, when the store clerk did just that, drawing his gun and thwarting an attempted robbery at the store.
According to local law enforcement, a man entered the store at 3:30 a.m. on Monday and flashed a weapon. Instead of handing over money, the clerk pulled a gun, prompting the robber to flee.
The unsuccessful attempted robber did not get away with anything, and law enforcement officers continue to search for him.
