Two new measures before the Massachusetts legislature would roll back the rifle ban instituted last year by state Attorney General Maura Healey.
SD 1157, sponsored by Republican state Sen. Don Humason, would remove the attorney general’s authority to regulate firearms and would repeal the previous regulations. SD 1889, sponsored by Democrat state Sen. Anne Gobi, would eliminate the term “copy” from statute, thereby eliminating the premise behind the attorney general’s actions.
Attorney General Healey’s “enforcement notice” greatly expanded the commonwealth’s definition of “assault weapon," making many legal firearms suddenly “illegal” with a stroke of the pen.
