Guns Are Keeping Minnesota Trap Shooting Team Out Of Yearbook

posted on April 28, 2017

Members of the Big Lake High School trap shooting team are up in arms after their yearbook photo was rejected by the school board. In the photo, all 60 members of the shooting team are represented, each posing with a shotgun by their side.

Steve Westerberg, the school superintendent, told 5 Eyewitness News that the student handbook “doesn’t allow firearms or weapons to be displayed. This rule has been in effect since the school started sponsoring a Trap Shooting Team.” However, Clayton Birdsall, a new recruit to the team, doesn’t see how his gun is any different than his baseball cap. “That's what you use in the sport. It's just natural,” he said. Birdsall’s dad agrees, adding, “It is a school-sanctioned activity. It’s not like the kids are doing anything with it. They are literally just holding a gun.”

Parents and coaches have requested the school board reconsider the ruling at an upcoming meeting.
