With a growing population of 100,000 people to protect and 19 vacant law-enforcement jobs, a Georgia sheriff recently told residents to obtain a firearm for self-defense.

“If you don’t have one, please go get one,” he said. “Please, folks, we have to arm ourselves.” The sheriff urged people not only to obtain a firearm, but also a Georgia Weapons Carry License.

The county, located 45 miles outside of Atlanta, is in need of deputies. Its website only lists job openings for a Communications Officer and a Jail Officer. However, a phone call by America’s 1stFreedom to the Sheriff’s office confirmed there are 19 open positions and a shortage of deputies.

The sheriff made recommendations to residents at a local church gathering where he discussed details about a recent murder-suicide. The case involved an estranged husband who drove after a car carrying his wife and male companion. When the couple’s car reached a dead-end, the husband opened fire and killed them before fatally shooting himself.

The sheriff told the group that this case and others reaffirm his strong beliefs in the Second Amendment. He also said his department would train people for free to use firearms. The next firing-range date is set for June 22.

“If you don’t have a gun, you can come and shoot ours,” he said. “If you’ve got one, come and bring you some ammunition. I promise you when you get through with our six-hour course, you’ll be able to shoot it upside down and behind your back like in the movies.”
