2 Thumbs Down For The Dayton (Fake) Daily News

If anyone ever invents an award for fake news, Dayton Daily News reporter Lynn Hulsey and the newspaper’s hapless headline writer should be the first in line for the “honor.”

The News on Friday posted a story to its website titled, “Hundreds killed by guns in workplaces.” Reporter Hulsey then doubled down on stupid with the lead sentence: “Firearms were the cause of about one-tenth of workplace fatalities in 2015, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).”

Surely Hulsey and her headline writing cohort in crime realize that guns didn’t really kill anybody, and that firearms weren’t actually “the cause” of any of the workplace deaths they discuss. Aren’t they smart enough to understand that every one of the people they are reporting on in their headline and lead sentence were really killed by a murderer using a gun as his or her tool for violence?

Is accurate reporting that doesn’t blame an inanimate object for criminal violence really too much for Dayton Daily News readers to expect?
