Alabama has become one of a handful of states where lawmakers are considering loosening the regulations on legal concealed carry of firearms through “permitless” carry legislation.

Republican state Sen. Gerald Allen pre-filed the measure last week, telling ABC 33/40: “Ten states have passed something similar to what we pre-filed yesterday. It gives the citizens of Alabama the right to carry their weapon with them and not have to purchase a permit."

SB 24 would repeal the permit requirement, while also retaining the permitting system for those who want to take advantage of reciprocity agreements with other states.

“When you look at this legislation, it codifies the fact that the American people and the people of Alabama believe in the Constitution, and you shouldn't pay a fee for the right to carry a weapon,” Allen said.
