Rep. Deb Haaland (D-N.M.) was confirmed as U.S. Secretary of the Interior by a 51-40 vote. In Haaland, President Joe Biden has added yet another anti-Second Amendment member to his cabinet.

On Haaland’s campaign website, she said, “We must take on the NRA! Congress needs to stop wasting lives and take action on gun violence—now. We must keep guns out of the hands of people who should never have a gun. We need 100% background checks and to close loopholes—especially with gun shows. We need to rid our communities of military-grade weapons; neither hunting nor policing require automatic weapons. We need major funding for behavioral health programs that are accessible to everyone.”

Of course, she ignores the fact the criminal element of society, by definition, disregards the law. Haaland instead wants to punish Americans who lawfully and responsibly exercise their rights. Also, at least one of the loopholes she says exists, in fact, does not.

In her duties as Interior secretary, Haaland will oversee the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which administers about one-fifth of the land in the U.S. Americans exercise their Second Amendment rights on much of this land by honing their skills shooting recreationally, and take part in one of our most cherished national heritages by hunting.

“Considering the Secretary of the Interior has quite a bit of influence over hunting and recreational shooting policies on federal land, her support for gun bans and other restrictive gun control is clearly problematic. Not only would such measures be unconstitutional infringements on the Second Amendment, but they would negatively impact revenue raised through the Pittman-Robertson Act, which is used to help fund wildlife conservation efforts,” said the NRA Institute for Legislative Action.

As America’s 1st Freedom has reported, America’s gun owners as a whole are a huge part of why the nation’s wildlife conservation programs are generally strong and successful, as taxes on gun and ammo sales go directly to conservation; as a result, this Interior secretary’s views towards Americans’ constitutional rights don’t bode well for conservation efforts.

“Representative Haaland’s track record demonstrates that she would not protect the interests of hunters, recreational shooters and sportsmen as Secretary of the Interior; as a result, the NRA opposes her confirmation,” said NRA-ILA.
