While Chicago was experiencing its most murderous January in a decade and a half, one Windy City resident was using her legally owned firearm to save her life.

According to police reports, a man broke into the woman’s house early Sunday morning and began beating her. During the struggle, she was able to get hold of her handgun and shoot the intruder, killing him and stopping the attack.

While legally acquiring a handgun in Chicago requires jumping through a number of unconstitutional hoops, this woman had fortunately taken the time and effort to navigate the labyrinth. Doing so might well have saved her life.
