A retired police officer intervened during an altercation in Salt Lake City, Utah, in which a knife-wielding assailant was seen threatening an apparently unarmed man. Although a crowd of bystanders had gathered, they seemed preoccupied by filming the attack instead of calling police.

The good Samaritan drew his firearm and told the assailant to lie down until police arrived. Members of the crowd began pressuring him to put down his own sidearm, but the situation remained stable until officers arrived two minutes later. Those involved should be happy that one witness was willing to take action instead of passively watching a tragedy ensue.
