California Bill Would Expand 10-Year Gun Ban On Misdemeanor Offenders

posted on August 22, 2015

A bill now moving through the California Assembly would expand the state’s automatic 10-year ban on gun ownership to a much larger pool of individuals convicted of misdemeanors, including offenses that are not even illegal outside California.

The legislation, SB 347, introduced in April by Democrat Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson, would lengthen the state’s list of offenses that trigger an automatic, 10-year prohibition on gun ownership to include misdemeanors such as selling or giving ammunition to a minor; transferring a handgun without a license; and possession of an unregistered firearm. It’s possible that some of these prohibitions could entrap innocent, otherwise lawful gun owners who give or lend firearms or ammunition to relatives without knowing California’s requirements.

Use Your Power!

The bill passed the Senate by a vote of 24-to-15, and is now moving through the lower house in Sacramento. Help stop this attack on your rights by identifying and contacting your California assembly member today.
