California Democrats Advance 11 Gun-Control Bills

posted on June 16, 2016

California gun-control lobbyists seemingly won’t be satisfied until all guns are banned outright in the state. State Democrats voted Tuesday to advance nearly a dozen anti-gun measures that include a mandate requiring gun owners to surrender or destroy any magazines that hold more than 10 rounds.

Representatives of the NRA and other gun-rights groups have opposed the legislative package, and testified that the bills will do nothing to improve safety and instead will create burdensome new rules for law-abiding gun owners. “They are utilizing tragedy to pass laws that will create more victims by disarming those who want only to defend themselves and their families,” said Craig J. DeLuz of the Firearms Policy Coalition.

The package of proposals—six Senate measures and five Assembly bills—will next be considered by the Assembly’s appropriations committee. The Senate bills would need to win approval on the Assembly floor before being sent to Gov. Jerry Brown for consideration.
