A man in the Lake Highlands area of Dallas, Texas, woke up to realize that two men had pried open a side door of his home with a crowbar and had entered the building. “I was kind of scared at first,” said Kendrick Dickson, the armed citizen. “I got my 8-month-old little boy here.”

Dickson retrieved his rifle and shot one of the two men, while the other escaped. The wounded suspect also fled but sought medical help at a hospital; he is expected to be charged upon release.

Dickson’s mother also arrived home just minutes after the incident. He explained, “I was just thinking, protect my family, protect my property, protect myself, and that’s what I did today.”
