We all know you’re supposed to honestly answer all questions all your voter registration form, right? Well, apparently the Texas Democratic Party has found a way around that. The party has mailed out forms to immigrants with the citizenship box already marked “yes.” See, that keeps a non-citizen from having to lie on the form. So it must make the registration legitimate, right?

And it likely could have worked had not complaints been filed with prosecutors. The Public Interest Legal Foundation deserves credit for the catch. The complaint, presented to district attorneys and the Department of Justice, included an affidavit from a man who attested to the fact that some of his relatives—who are not citizens—received the solicitation. The nonprofit legal group also included copies of the pre-marked applications.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott was appalled and promised an investigation. “If true, there will be consequences,” he said.

The outside of the envelope included a sales pitch to garner response. An external message on it reads: “Urgent! Your voter registration deadline is October 9. Your voter registration application is inside. Complete, sign and return it today!”

Internal papers suggest that even if someone is unsure whether they can register, fill out and send in the form anyway.

In a related situation, Sam Taylor, spokesman for Texas’s secretary of state, told The Washington Times that his office has received calls from people whose long-dead relatives were being named on such mailings.

Legitimate voters in Texas need to do their part to offset the shenanigans. Show up at the polls Nov. 6 and cast your vote for officials who don’t stoop to such levels.
