Women in Detroit are taking up arms, and their motivation is singular—self-defense. At the Action Impact Firearms and Training Centers in Eastpoint and Southfield, ladies are showing up in droves for eight-hour classes that will teach them how to shoot.

The Detroit News talked to some of these women and, for each, the story is very similar. “Because I’m home now by myself and we see a lot of seniors who are being targeted in home invasions, I do want to take it upon myself to learn how to use a gun,” said newly widowed Nita Brown, 63. Alanna Tremble, 26, added, “My older sister was robbed a few years ago. I think it is better to be educated about this.”

Brown, Tremble and many other women like them are taking charge of their own safety. And they’re doing it by taking matters into their own hands in the form of firearm training.

No More Tax on Suppressors!

When President Donald Trump (R) signed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBB) into law on July 4, 2025, he scheduled the end of the burdensome $200 excise tax imposed on suppressors, short-barreled firearms and “any other weapons” as defined by the National Firearms Act (NFA).
