Breitbart editor Milo Yiannopoulos was scheduled to speak at the University of California, Berkeley, on Wednesday. Prior to the event, however, protesters of the right-wing commentator’s appearance gathered and violence soon erupted—rioters threw smoke bombs and flares, broke windows and attacked innocent people.
The school, which ironically originated the Free Speech Movement in the 1960s, was forced to cancel the event. University officials were quick to condemn the violence and blamed it on a group of “150 masked agitators” dressed in black and hooded sweatshirts.
On Thursday, President Donald Trump weighed in. “If U.C. Berkeley does not allow free speech and practices violence on innocent people with a different point of view – NO FEDERAL FUNDS?” he tweeted.
"I think tonight is odious and a horrible spectacle and very humiliating for American higher education," said Yiannopoulos. “One thing we do know for sure: The Left is absolutely terrified of free speech and will do literally anything to shut it down."
