Everytown Head: American Colleges Are "Incredibly Safe"

posted on June 11, 2015

In a CNN opinion piece attacking policies that remove the prohibitions against Right to Carry on college campuses, John Feinblatt, who leads former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's anti-gun group Everytown for Gun Safety, wrote this week that "college campuses, historically, are incredibly safe places."

When he worked as Mayor Bloomberg's chief adviser for policy and strategic planning, Feinblatt wrote some astonishingly cynical and insensitive things in internal emails revealed through a Freedom of Information Act request, but the gall of this claim is impossible to ignore.

Far from being “incredibly safe places,” American colleges and schools are where, according to the FBI, an average of more than seven murders, 160 robberies, 388 rapes and 1,297 aggravated assaults are committed each year.
