If you thought we were being hyperbolic when we said in our June print issue that, yes, they really do want to take your guns, consider that a couple of U.S. House and Senate Democrats on Wednesday introduced a bill that would establish a full-throated federal firearm licensing system.

Rep. Bobby Rush, D-Ill., put forth the House version, while Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., advanced the Senate companion bill.

Now, it’s early in the game and it’s worth noting that Rush has made similar efforts during past congressional sessions, but this version, the Blair Holt Firearm Licensing and Record of Sale Act, is far-reaching and clearly aimed at diminishing the firearms freedom of law-abiding Americans. It would prohibit unlicensed gun ownership, would require a valid federal license for transferring and receiving guns, and would require so-called “universal” background checks for all sales and transfers of guns.

Of course, anti-gun advocates think this would pretty much eliminate all crimes that are committed with guns, and once again, these far reaching restrictions would only impact peaceable, responsible citizens. But those intent on committing crimes or already prohibited from possessing firearms will continue to ignore the law, including these new proposals if passed.

Yet again, we are seeing knee-jerk reactions from anti-gun advocates who want, above all else, to find every possible way to limit private firearm ownership in the U.S.  Such legislation only affects law-abiding citizens and does nothing to keep a bad guy from finding yet another way to skirt the law.

And it would move this country one step closer to gun confiscation at the whim of the government, something the Second Amendment was designed explicitly to protect against.
