The Federal Bureau of Investigation processed a record number of background checks in September, indicating that firearm sales for the month were the highest in recent history.

The actual number of sales is likely higher since multiple firearms can be sold under a single background check and sales between private parties are not taken into account.

The summer of 2015 overall has also shattered gun sales records. A staggering 8.25 million background checks were processed through the FBI between May and September, nearly a million more than the same period of 2014.

The summer has also seen an increase in calls from Democrats for new gun control laws—likely not unrelated to the sales increase.
