At approximately 7:30 a.m. last Friday, a man forced his way through the front door of a home in Hammond, Ind., pulled a gun, then told the residents he knew there was a safe inside and he intended to rob them. That’s when he corralled three of the occupants and ordered them to the basement.

Unfortunately for the suspect, there were four people at home.

Police Lt. Steve Kellogg told the Northwest Indiana Times that when the would-be robber led the three out of the basement and back into the kitchen, a fourth resident—who had been hiding in another room—encountered the suspect and shot him multiple times. Police pronounced the intruder, who has not yet been identified, dead at the scene, and investigators have labeled the shooting a clear case of self-defense.
