When John Lott—an acclaimed researcher and author—recently suggested that the President’s Advisory Commission on Election Integrity consider using the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) to screen voters, his credibility was quickly and harshly attacked by Democrats and mainstream media. Last week, he answered the critics in an opinion piece that ran in The Hill.

In the article, Lott points out the double standard of Democrats trumpeting background checks for guns, but then turning around and claiming that conducting similar checks for voters would suppress the vote, slow the process and increase costs. Lott notes that checks on voters would actually be a simple, low-cost process.

“The NICS system solves all of the objections that Democrats are likely to raise. They’re on record believing that it is a fair and accurate system that doesn’t prevent eligible people from buying a gun. But Democrats’ hysteria over applying this to voter registration raises real questions about their sincerity,” Lott concludes.
