Over and over, Brandon Endicott beat his ex-girlfriend, Krystal Shepard. Then he used his knee to strike her in the face repeatedly, resulting in broken bones and multiple stitches. Shepard notified authorities, who placed a warrant for assault on Endicott—but she also made sure she was prepared should he come back.

Kentucky State Police say she was absolutely ready when he burst into her home early Tuesday morning. She grabbed her firearm and fired twice, driving Endicott out the door. Responding police found the suspect dead in an adjoining yard of an Auxier trailer park.

Jackie Sammons, a neighbor who has lived in the peaceful community of around 700 most of her life, was taken aback. “You never hear of nothing like that around here, you know what I'm saying. It's definitely a quiet little town.”
