The state of Maine has taken a step to proactively defend shooting ranges against restrictive ordinances and frivolous litigation.

Legislative Document 79, sponsored by Republican state Rep. Patrick Corey, allows the discharge of a firearm on a sport shooting range within 100 yards of a building, if the range was operating prior to the construction of the building. The effect of this bill is that new businesses that spring up within earshot of shooting ranges will not be able to put them out of business over noise or safety complaints. Gov. Janet Mills signed the bill into law on March 29.
