Two couples are suing the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services over the department’s reported demands that foster parents not exercise their Second Amendment rights.

According to a story at Guns.com, William and Jill Johnson agreed to foster their grandson; when William arrived to take him from the MDHHS, caseworkers searched him and demanded the serial numbers to his firearms. He protested that this was illegal and was allegedly informed, “If you want to care for your grandson, you will have to give up some of your constitutional rights.” Johnson says the department staff further threatened to take the child back into custody if he failed to comply. He also reports that the county judge who placed the child in their home further warned the couple not to violate the department’s gun policy although he recognized it was unconstitutional.

Brian and Naomi Mason, the other couple bringing the lawsuit, are interested in fostering but feel that they are expected to deprive themselves of their right to bear arms.
