Connecticut U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy has been mentioned as a possible vice presidential pick for Hillary Clinton. Like the Democratic candidate, Murphy is a staunch anti-gun advocate. Also like Clinton, Murphy has no qualms about distorting the facts as needed.

After his bogus claim last year that there had been a school shooting every week since Sandy Hook, The Washington Post “awarded” Murphy one of the biggest “Pinocchios” of 2015. But that hasn’t deterred him.

Last week, Murphy spoke of the “epidemic of young children being killed accidently by guns” and used a supporting “2,000 to 3,000” figure that included both children and teens, and included not just accidents but homicides and suicides as well. Fact check: There were actually 69 accidental firearm fatalities among children 14 and under in 2013.

While tragic, that’s hardly an “epidemic.” In fact, the real figure represents a decrease of 66 percent over the last two decades. But hey, whatever it takes to sell gun control, right?
