If you’re a criminal planning a nighttime mugging in Brooklyn, and you decide to confront a man leaving a restaurant, best make sure it’s not an off-duty NYPD officer.

Investigators are reporting that an officer and his cousin were leaving an eatery a little after midnight on Tuesday when a man tried to rob them. The officer began struggling with the man over a gun when several shots were fired, leaving shell casings all over Sixth Avenue in Park Slope.

The suspected robber raced off, but soon after a 32-year-old man was admitted to a nearby hospital with a gunshot wound. He is the prime suspect in the attempted robbery. Local residents told CBS2 that it’s an unsettling and unusual occurrence in their quiet quarter. “It’s still scary. It’s supposed to be a safe neighborhood,” one woman added. The officer involved in the shooting has been with the NYPD for five years.
