In addition to his CNN “town hall,” President Barack Obama submitted an op-ed to The New York Times elaborating his feelings on gun control. The president promises not to support any candidate in the future—even a Democrat—who does not support gun control. He also, predictably, tells some falsehoods, most notably repeating Hillary Clinton’s frequent lie about a lack of liability for gun manufacturers and retailers.

President Obama claims that gun lobbyists have “… guaranteed that manufacturers enjoy virtual immunity from lawsuits, which means that they can sell lethal products and rarely face consequences.” Last time we checked, guns are supposed to be lethal; manufacturers can certainly be sued for making them incorrectly, but not for making them do what they are intended for. What the president wants is an environment in which the gun industry can be bombarded into non-existence with frivolous lawsuits—his supposed concern over liability is a sham.

No More Tax on Suppressors!

When President Donald Trump (R) signed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBB) into law on July 4, 2025, he scheduled the end of the burdensome $200 excise tax imposed on suppressors, short-barreled firearms and “any other weapons” as defined by the National Firearms Act (NFA). That end came on January 1.

In his inauguration speech as the new mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani said, behind his characteristically easy smile, “We will replace the frigidity of rugged individualism with the warmth of collectivism.”
