A deranged man recently went on a crime rampage that left two dead and four injured in Maine. Even more devastating, it could all have been prevented.

It began with the kidnapping and assault of Brittany Irish. Her captor released her, and she went straight to the police—who, citing lack of manpower, refused to send a trooper home with her. The result: The assailant burned down Brittany’s mother’s barn and killed her boyfriend and father of her children. He also killed another person and injured several along the way.

We guarantee that Brittany wishes she had had a gun on that horrific day. It’s a tragic reminder of the realities of today’s world—we must have the ability to be armed if we choose to do so. As Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke so often says, the time to outsource our personal safety to the government is long over.
