State Rep. Lisa Subeck, D-Madison, and three other Wisconsin Assembly Democrats have introduced a bill to ban outright all possession and transfer of semi-automatic rifles within the state. Referring erroneously to such firearms as “assault weapons,” the legislation states its intention to prevent future mass shootings.

If Subeck and her associates were serious about preventing mass shootings—or better yet, the rampant gun crime that claims far more numerous victims in inner-city communities—they would have noticed that semi-automatic rifles are seldom used to commit crimes. But who cares about actual results, or how crippling this would be to hunters, collectors and competitive shooters—the important thing is to look like you’re “doing something” about criminal violence!
