Springfield Armory has donated one of its new XD-S Mod.2 9 mm handguns for an auction that will benefit the families of police officers who were killed in the line of duty. The auction started Aug. 1, the official release date of the Mod. 2, and continues until Aug. 12.

This is the latest generation of the most popular pistol that Springfield has ever offered. The line started out with a model that fires .45 ACP. The things that made that gun a hot-selling item are now incorporated into one for 9 mm Luger rounds.

The money will be donated to Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.). In a typical year, more than 100 law enforcement officers are slain while working to keep everyday Americans safe. That number includes victims who are shot by people they are pursuing, as well as traffic accidents and other tragedies that occur on the job. C.O.P.S. helps survivors rebuild their lives afterward.

Springfield touts the reliability of the new gun, saying it can fire 25,000 rounds without encountering problems. The 9 mm version offers a slim profile (less than an inch wide) for excellent concealability.

It also withstood drop tests, thanks to the fact that it has a grip safety to go along with the striker safety.

The MSRP is $586.
