Tennessee: Where A Park Isn’t Really A Park

In April, Tennessee enacted a law allowing concealed-carry holders to take handguns into parks. For law-abiding gun owners planning to attend the Tennessee Valley Fair in September, that was good news. At least, it was until the city of Knoxville pulled an end-around that resulted in guns being banned. Their tactic: claiming that Chilhowee Park wasn’t in fact a park, but an entertainment venue where the law wouldn’t apply.

At least one resident wasn’t happy. Pandora Vreeland had planned to attend the fair with her husband, a retired police officer, until they learned guns were banned. Now Vreeland is suing the city, claiming they violated state law by turning Chilhowee Park into a gun-free zone.

Vreeland’s lawsuit has NRA backing. “The 5 million members of the NRA stand in full support of the plaintiff and look forward to a positive resolution,” said Lacey Biles of NRA State and Local Affairs.
