John Hunt was outside washing his car with his two sons around 7 p.m. when they were approached by two armed men. One of the men put his gun to the neck of Hunt's son, Marcus, and said, "You know what time it is." Marcus ran into a nearby yard and the suspect followed him, taking a necklace and a large amount of cash. He then fired a shot at Marcus. Meanwhile, Hunt had gone inside and retrieved his 9 mm handgun. Hunt quickly returned to the scene and fired at both suspects, striking one in the chest and the other in the thigh. After being treated, both men were arrested and are now facing charges of first-degree robbery. (The Buffalo News, Buffalo, N.Y., 7/30/13)

Frencheon Martin was working around 4 p.m. at a Trader Joe's warehouse when a co-worker stepped in front of the forklift he was operating and began screaming at him. The altercation soon escalated and the two men had to be separated by their co-workers.  The angry co-worker then removed a large folding knife from his pocket and advanced toward Martin, who responded by pulling out the .40-cal. Glock he was licensed to carry. The knife-wielding co-worker fled. He was later found, arrested and charged with terroristic threats, possession of a prohibited offensive weapon, simple assault and disorderly conduct. (The Express-Times, Allentown, Pa., 12/26/13)

August 1960: Shortly before midnight two men roused Oscar Gruter in his Santa Clara, Calif., motel and asked for a room. Suddenly, one of them grabbed Gruter by the throat and the companion headed for the adjacent bedroom. Hearing the melee, Gruter's wife, Johanna Marie, left the bed, grabbed a cal. .38 revolver, and met the intruder. The bandit lunged at her, she fired, and he fled with a bullet through his hand and chest. Johanna Marie then came to her husband's call for help and killed the bandit with two shots.
