After a brief altercation in the living room, Duffy pulled out a firearm and fired multiple rounds, killing the intruder. It was reported that Duffy and the intruder did not know each other. Neither Duffy nor his son were injured during the home invasion. (Portland Press Herald, Rome, Maine, 10/1/13)

A resident was at home when three attempted robbers trespassed on his property to steal scrap metal. The resident heard the trespassers early in the morning and confronted them with a firearm. He was able to hold one would-be robber at gunpoint until police arrived around 8:30 a.m. while the other two thieves fled the scene. Officers conducted a search using dogs and were able to apprehend one of the other two suspects. Both suspects were charged with one count each of breaking and entering and criminal trespass.
