Voices On Left Speak Out Against New Push For Gun Control

While the president and the front page of The New York Times call for stricter gun laws and the denial of due process for individuals on the FBI’s terror watch list, some on the left have become disillusioned with this gun-control crusade. A post on PJ Media, titled “How the ‘New York Times’ and Loretta Lynch Made Me Join the NRA,” condemns the Obama administration’s dangerous conflation of attacks by crazed lone shooters with the coordinated actions of terrorists. The writer concludes by proclaiming, “You’ve got another one-time Jewish lefty in the NRA.”

Meanwhile, The Daily Beast published a piece called “My Fellow Liberals, Don’t Support Obama’s Terror Watch List Gun Ban.” It is promising to see that so much of what we have pointed out about the dangers of such a ban is coming to the attention of thoughtful people who are not necessarily supporters of gun rights.

President Misleads Americans On Gun Rights And Terrorism

In his first prime-time Oval Office address in five years, President Barack Obama on Sunday night used last week’s terrorist shootings in San Bernardino to push more gun-control schemes—again in a dishonest and misleading fashion. “Congress should act to make sure no one on a no-fly list is able to buy a gun,” Obama lectured, suggesting that such a law would have stopped the attack.

First of all, Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s legislation that stalled in the Senate didn’t just ban gun sales to persons on the “no fly list”—but also on the FBI’s so-called “Terrorist Screening Database,” which contains 15 to 30 times as many names

More importantly, as CNN reported, neither of the two terrorists killed in San Bernardino were on any list. So not only would Obama’s schemes not have prevented those crimes—they also would leave countless innocent Americans defenseless. That’s dishonest, and it’s indefensible.

Senate Holds The Line On 2A Rights

The legislation had a seemingly benign title—the “Restoring Americans’ Healthcare Freedom Reconciliation Act.” But, if passed, H.R. 3762 would have empowered the Department of Justice to deny gun sales to those on the government’s terror watch list. In other words, it would have turned the “no-fly” list into a “no-guns” list as well. For more background, Colion Noir discusses the terror watch list here.

Fortunately, the bill proposed by long-time anti-gun activist Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., failed on Thursday by a vote of 45-54 in the pro-gun Senate. Also failing was the dusted-off Manchin-Toomey “universal” background check bill that would ban private transfers of guns between friends and family members. It was defeated by a vote of 47-50, and received fewer votes than when it debuted two years ago.

We applaud these wins, and offer a big thank you to the Senate for standing on the side of freedom.

Oakland Officials Pushing Feel-Good Anti-Gun Measures

California’s strict gun-control laws didn’t affect the terrorists who killed 14 people in San Bernardino last week, but that’s not stopping Oakland city leaders from attempting to institute even more restrictions—laws that only the law-abiding would obey.

Oakland Vice Mayor Rebecca Kaplan is pushing proposals to mandate that gun owners and law enforcement who leave a firearm in a vehicle lock it up; require gun owners to secure their guns at home when not in use; and ban magazines holding more than 10 rounds.

Kaplan said, “We must take action,” referencing the San Bernardino attack, yet none of the proposals would have stopped that rampage. The two storage provisions weren’t even a consideration, and there is already a statewide ban on so-called “high-capacity” magazines. Plus, who really believes that terrorists—who already broke a laundry list of dozens of laws by planning and undertaking a murderous attack—would care what additional restrictions Oakland might place on law-abiding gun owners?

Nevada Politician Shows 2A Pride With Family Christmas Card

Nevada Assemblywoman Michele Fiore’s Christmas card has been making waves on social media. The Republican state representative showed her support for the Second Amendment by sharing the card—which shows her family members, dressed in blue jeans and red tops, holding various types of firearms in front of a Christmas tree—on Facebook.

Fiore said she’s received positive feedback from all over the world, but the negative comments have been “the most vile and insulting comments I’ve ever read against myself and my family.”

“What’s regrettable is governing and forcing innocent people to be defenseless while allowing and inviting terrorists into our country knowing the murderous outcome,” she said in an email to CNN. “My strong message to you is it’s time Americans begin protecting America. Get armed, get trained, get your head out of the sand and be prepared.”

Armed Citizen Stops Three Robbers In Newport News

A vigilant customer is credited with stopping a recent armed robbery in Newport News, Va. Just before 10 p.m., three men wearing masks, gloves and tennis shoes ran into a Family Dollar discount store. According to police, the smallest of the men had a handgun drawn as the three approached the register. They announced to the cashier that they were robbing the store, but before they could take any money, a customer in the checkout line, who had been watching the situation unfold, pulled out his concealed firearm. When the men saw the gun, they immediately fled on foot.

Based on the clothing, shoes and physical builds of the suspects as captured on surveillance cameras, police believe they may have committed a string of other armed robberies in Newport News and the nearby city of Hampton before being foiled in this recent attempt.
