Maine-ly False

A series of ads produced by Bloomberg’s Everytown and Moms groups opposing Maine’s LD652 (a bill extending permitless carry to those wishing to carry concealed) are, unsurprisingly, littered with lies and half-truths. A claim that 84 percent of Mainers “want permits for concealed carry” cites only a Bloomberg-supported study. Assertions that LD652 would make Maine more dangerous are equally suspect: Similar legislation caused murder rates to fall in Alaska (23%), Arizona (16%) and Wyoming (8%). But the biggest whopper is that LD652 would allow violent criminals to carry concealed. Even if the bill included this provision (it doesn’t), federal law prohibits felons from owning firearms.

Use Your Power

Conveniently left out of the ads is what the bill would actually do: Stop law-abiding gun owners from becoming criminals when they put on a coat or place their gun in a handbag. Maine residents, encourage your representatives to support this legislation by clicking here.
